Wellness Introduction

Seeking balance in seven dimensions

This is not a place to find recipes, exercise routines, or diet tips. I am not trying to sell a product or plug a YouTube video. I am not some health guru with a 12-point plan, but I do like to observe the world around me. What I have noticed is how different aspects of life are linked. If my body is in pain, it affects my mental capacity. If I have not spent time in nature, all other aspects of my life weaken. When I speak of wellness, I mean finding balance and the recognition that everything is interconnected. To be well is not just the absence of illness but coming as close as possible to feeling a sense of wholeness.

This idea of balanced well-being is linked to the notion that being well is not merely a matter of not being ill. I came across the Seven Dimensions of Wellness and realized that most, if not all, of what I want to write about falls under the different areas that constitute true well-being.

What are the Seven Dimensions of Wellness?

  • Physical Wellness - Helping the body be able to function well

  • Emotional Wellness - Being aware of and learning how to handle emotions

  • Intellectual Wellness - Finding ways to feed the mind with curiosity, creativity, and cultivation

  • Social Wellness - Having communal and cultural significance

  • Vocational Wellness - Fulfillment in one’s purpose

  • Spiritual Wellness - To find meaning outside of oneself

  • Environmental Wellness - Care, gratitude, and kinship with the earth

Will I be writing about each of these areas? Probably not. However, I do believe that all these areas are connected and should be considered in day-to-day life. I am more interested in the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and environmental aspects of health, and I will generally write with those themes in mind.
